Actual Condition
It is reported while out on Lake Michigan, boating / jet-skiing, an impending storm required a return back to marina. Approaching the marina, the storm hit. The Captain backed the vessel down to avoid hitting the stone jetty break walls at the entrance.
While backing down, the jet ski was tossed off the hydraulic platform at the stern and the vessel ran over the jet ski, disabling the yacht. The vessel went adrift, coming to reset in a corner of a sheet piling / concrete seawall and finger pier.
The vessel was tossed about the seawall and onto the rocky bottom. The mid cabin master berth was flooded. The engine / machinery compartment was also flooded, with the water level near the top of the exhaust manifolds. The laundry room was also flooded.
The vessel exhibited major starboard hull-side damage, with the core material exposed, and in many areas, missing. The bow exhibited major structural damage. There was no apparent port hull side damage with exception to the damage at the bow that encompassed both the port and starboard hull-sides.
The center section of the aft keel was severely compromised / holed, along the portside. The starboard rudder and the lower section of the rudder was missing. The remaining section of the rudder was bent. The starboard propeller was mangled and the starboard shaft exhibited a bow forward of the strut.
The hull was fractured around the starboard strut. The port rudder blade was bent in a 90 degree angle to starboard. The port propeller was mangled. There was a braided nylon tow line entangled between the port propeller and strut. This is believed to be the tow line for the jet ski.
The starboard corner to the platform was missing, with the core material exposed. The starboard stern corner was missing a large section. The starboard hull side exhibited damage from bow to stern. The majority of the damage appeared to be from vertical movement when the vessel was being tossed in the corner of the seawall and finger pier prior to the bow coming to rest on the finger pier.
Many areas exhibited the hull-side core material. The vessel exhibited a wrap on the hull, deck and superstructure. On the port side, removal of undamaged wrap revealed scratches in the exterior finish. The same was found on the starboard side in both damaged and undamaged areas. The bow exhibited a triangular hole, estimated to be 6 to 8 feet in size, exposing the remains of the forward bulkhead V-Berth. The aft starboard section of the wing leading to the hydraulic platform was fractured, and had sections missing. The washer / dryer were exposed to seawater, and the cabinetry was in a pile.
The machinery compartment, which was flooded, contained the main MAN Diesel Engines, transmission, v-drives, batteries, converter, Glendenning Cable Master System, hydraulic pump, generator, reverse osmosis watermaker, and many other mechanical and electrical systems and components, all of which were exposed and or immersed in seawater.
The panel in the port stern corner of the salon was dislodged, and the same for the galley. The high water mark in the master stateroom was approximately 5 feet above the deck, and clearly visible on the mirrors and bulkhead. The waterline was approximately 4 inches above the bottom of the vertical opening windows in the master stateroom. All bedding was water logged.
There were systems located below the decks in this area that were immersed in seawater, including, but not limited to air-conditioning systems and ducting.
Weather Deck: There was minimal damage observed to the weather deck, although the vertical chain capstan windlass appeared to have been pulled forward.
